“24 Hospitalized in Bida Amid Outbreak of Mysterious Illness”

At least 24 residents of Bida, the headquarters of Bida Local Government Area in Niger State, have been hospitalized following the outbreak of a strange illness in the town. The condition, which has caused alarm in the community, is characterized by sudden collapse and loss of communication abilities, leaving many in the town deeply concerned.

Reports indicate that 20 of the affected individuals have been discharged after receiving more than a week of treatment at both the Federal Medical Centre and Umaru Sanda Ndayako General Hospital in Bida.

Dr. Bello Tukur, the Niger State Commissioner for Secondary and Tertiary Health, explained that the illness is linked to untreated severe typhoid and malaria. He noted that the Disease Surveillance Unit of the Public Health Department in the state received reports of the outbreak on January 19, 2025.

“A rapid response team, led by the Assistant State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer, conducted an investigation on January 20, 2025, alongside local government officials,” Dr. Tukur said.

According to the commissioner, the illness primarily presents as sudden weakness and loss or altered consciousness, often accompanied by fever. As of now, three patients remain in hospitals, with two at FMC Bida and one at Umaru Sanda Ndayako Hospital, while the others have recovered and been discharged.

Further investigation revealed that the illness stemmed from poorly treated malaria and typhoid fever, with hypersomnolence due to diphenhydramine also considered a potential contributing factor.

Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported from the outbreak. All patients received treatment locally within Bida, and the state and local governments have taken steps to educate the public on maintaining good environmental and personal hygiene, as well as proper nutrition.

Dr. Tukur also confirmed that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has been informed and that additional laboratory investigations are ongoing. Local authorities are conducting active case searches in health facilities and the surrounding community to prevent further spread of the illness.
