3 Nigerian Teenagers Set Five World Records In Skipping
Three Nigerian teenagers have collectively set five world records showcasing their impressive skipping skills.
Gbenga Ezekiel, 18, achieved two records for the most skips in one minute on one leg (278) and the most double under skips in one minute on one leg (144).
Philip Solomon, 16, broke a record for the most rope crossovers while skipping on one leg in 30 seconds (69) and equalled another for the most rope crossovers while skipping on one leg in 30 seconds blindfolded (62).
On his part, Dunsin Dubem, 16, set a record for the most double under crossovers while skipping in 30 seconds (78).
These achievements marked the second and third Guinness World Records titles for Philip, who earned his first in early 2023 for the most skips in 30 seconds on one foot (153).
The trio, coached by Ukandu Chibuisi in Akure, began their skipping journey at age 14-15 and turned to breaking world records after facing financial constraints preventing their participation in the World Jump Rope Championships.
Motivated by their coach, the teenagers followed intensive daily training programs and persevered through the challenges of juggling schoolwork and training. Their dedication paid off, leading to the successful claim of highly contested world records.
The trio plans to continue breaking records in 2024 and has initiated “Rope Skipping in My School,” aiming to promote skipping in urban and rural communities and discover new talents in the sport.
