Nigerian Rights Lawyer, Mahmud Arraigned, Released On Self-recognition For Reporting Power-Drunk Assistant Police Commissioner
Human rights lawyer, Abdul Mahmud on Wednesday said he was waiting in the court for charges of breach of peace, burglary and refusal of arrest.
Abdul Mahmud, who made this known in a post on his verified Twitter handle, noted that he was also waiting to take his plea and that of his client, the Chairman of the Incorporated Trustees of Fatima Gold Estate.
He added that the nominal complainants are ACP Amabua Muhammed and Retired ACP Adeh who were indebted to his client.
“Waiting to be read charges of breach of peace, burglary, refusal of arrest and to take my plea and that of my client, Chairman of the INCORPORATED TRUSTEES OF FATIMA GOLD ESTATE.
“The nominal complainants are ACP Amabua Muhammed and Rtrd ACP Adeh who’re indebted to my client,” he added.
In another tweet he said, “Granted bail on self-recognisance by His Worship, Hajia Aisha, Magistrate sitting at the International Market, Mararaba, Nasarawa State. So also my client, Emmanuel Ejeh.
Matter adjourned to 31 July, 2023. Impressed by the erudition of His Worship.”
SaharaReporters had in June reported how ACP Zara Muhammed stormed Karu in Nasarawa State with some officers and harassed some residents of the area.
In a tweet, Mahmud had urged the police to caution their officers.
“A serving Assistant Commissioner of Police serving with the Multinational Joint Task Force is intimidating civilians in Karu, Nasarawa State. @PoliceNG must call its officer to order,” he had tweeted.
The police officers later invaded his home and arrested him.
“I have taken the intimidation of citizens too far. Because I defended ordinary citizens intimidated by ACP Zara Muhammed on Sunday in Karu, officers led by Insp Sola Olalekan have arrested me in my own home. Headed to the station at Abacha Road, Mararaba @policeng,” he later tweeted.
Mahmud, however, regained his freedom hours after being arrested for defending a neighbour intimidated by an Assistant Commissioner of Police serving with the Multinational Joint Task Force, Zara Muhammed.
The Nigerian activist, who appreciated the people who pushed for his release had said; “The Great Oracle is back to the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine. A formal statement will be issued in due course. Thanks to all people of conscience for defending freedom. Greetings from the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine.”
