Businessmen Demand N100m Damages From Police, Others
Two businessmen arrested and detained by the Nigeria Police have filed a suit before a Federal High Court in Lafia against the Inspector General of Police, Baba Alkali Usman, and others.
Yusuf Isiaka and Rilwanu Idris were arrested and detained by the police from December 28, 2022 to January 3 in Doma, Nasarawa State over allegations of tearing the campaign poster of the deputy governor of the state, Dr Emmanuel Agbado Akabe.
They alleged that the police picked them up at the deputy governor’s residence after they were invited there.
The businessmen also asked the court to restrain the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force, including their privies, agents, and servants from further arresting and detaining them in connection with the subject matter of the application and an award of N100 million in damages.
In the fundamental rights enforcement application brought on January 3 by their counsel, Mohammed Danjuma, they contended that their detention for six days was a violation of section 41(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999.
They also sought, among other reliefs, a declaration that the FIR pending before the magistrate is a fabrication of executive lawlessness, null and void.
No date has been fixed for a hearing.
