The very respected learned silk OJ OJO ADEBAYO, sir, I thank you for this great and pragmatic opinion, founded upon reality as opposed to play-to-the-gallery.

*MY COMMENT:*

1️⃣. Judges’ welfare are not neglected in Nigeria.

2️⃣Nigerian judges have not justified the huge monies they receive as salaries, allowances and welfare packages

3️⃣Nigerian judges are not emulating their counterparts in other countries; they’re are just demanding “improved welfare”, whatever that means — administration of justice in Nigeria is among the most, if not the most, inefficient, dormant, stagnant, and ineffective in the entire world. There’s no plan by Nigerian judges to change the narrative. They’re busy demanding improved welfare while doing practically NOTHING to justify the huge monies they collect.

4️⃣Like you said, if it’s true that judges are neglected, why is it that the high and mighty in Nigeria, all are involved in a fierce struggle, by all means, to get their sons, daughters, wives and relatives into the Bench as judges? We’re just deceiving ourselves by pursuing shadows instead of facing reality

5️⃣In my opinion, any judge in whose court any cases stays pending for more than 3 years should be shown the way out, to pave way for employment of more serious-minded persons to take up the job and do it more effectively.

6️⃣The currently needless quest for “improved welfare” for the judges has beclouded our sense of what a better judiciary. Any time a meeting is held to discuss how to move the judiciary forward, the only thing we discuss is “judges welfare”. That is hypocrisy and un-pragmatism, and gross injustice to the hundreds of thousands of helpless litigants whose cases stay pending in the various courts for up to 20-30 years only because Nigerian judges have proven to be the most indolent, the most unerious, the most un-pragmatic, and th most ineffective in the world. A country in which lawsuit arising from a mere argument between a landlord and his tenant over the validity of a quit notice could stay pending in court for up to 29 (twenty-nine) years deserves to have all its judicial officers, from A to Z, sacked and sanctioned for not knowing what they’re doing.

7️⃣While I am not saying there should not be improvement from time to time in judges’ welfare, I respectfully advocate that any judge who is not satisfied with the current pay should quit. Nigerian judges who are busy perpetually complaining of “improved welfare” are the real enemies of administration of justice in Nigeria, because they have refused to do the work for which they’re employed and, I assure you, handsomely paid. Let’s stop all this unnecessary noise about “welfare of judges” and find a way to put measures in place to FORCE Nigerian judges to do their work; as of today, they’re not doing their work.

8️⃣Anyone who says that Nigerian judges are not currently well taken care of, is being economical with the truth, although there is need for periodic improvement.

Respectfully,

*Sylvester Udemezue (udems)*
