NJC Denies Discussing FJSC Supreme Court Nominees List, Calls Reports ‘Mischief-Making’

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has refuted the reports circulating on social media, stating that it is unaware or did not receive any nomination list for Supreme Court vacancies from the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC).

Soji Oye, the Director of Information at NJC, clarified on Saturday that he was never in a discussion with anybody regarding receiving or not receiving the list of nominees from the FJSC. He pointed out that the report circulating on social media is the handiwork of mischief-makers.

Recall that there were reports stating that the FJSC released 22 names for NJC’s consideration to fill vacancies at the apex court bench. It reportedly includes regional distribution of candidates across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

This development follows reports in September indicating that the Supreme Court was operating with only 10 out of its constitutional strength of 21 judges. At that time, it was reported that the FJSC had submitted a shortlist to address the vacant positions.

Oye cautioned against unverified reports circulating on social media regarding Supreme Court nominations and the process being followed to fill vacancies on the bench.
