Group wants Enugu water facilities maintained

Network of Water Rights Initiative (NWRI) has said that a maintenance plan for recently introduced water facilities in Enugu State will ensure that residents enjoy the facilities.

Governor Peter Mbah had, at the weekend, commissioned the Ninth Mile and Oji River schemes to supply 120 million litres of water daily as against two million litres supplied in the state.

Commending Mbah for fulfilling his campaign promise to restore portable water to the state in 180 days, the National Coordinator of the group, Amaka Nweke, said the way the government was moving, “it is certain that it is poised to address the perennial water scarcity residents have faced for a long time.

“We need to see that there is a sustainable plan for these facilities. Government should be able to put up sustenance and maintenance plans so that we don’t return to where we are coming from. The truth is that some of these facilities have been there for about 40 years but have not worked due to lack of maintenance.

“We have noticed a number of water galleries in the state and we are concerned that these facilities should be protected. Let there be a deliberate plan to protect these facilities for the utmost benefit of the state,” she added.
