NBA Urges Judiciary Workers Against Bribery, Extortion
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ibadan branch has urged judiciary workers in Oyo State to desist from demanding bribes and inducements from members of the public. This appeal was made on Wednesday during a legal outreach organized jointly with the state chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Mr. Kazim Gbadamosi, speaking on behalf of NBA Ibadan, noted that soliciting money or favors could lead to miscarriage of justice and tarnish the image of the judiciary. He warned court workers against collaborating to undermine justice delivery.
“Let’s do our jobs properly by keeping to time; avoid demanding anything from anybody and you will be appreciated in due time,” Gbadamosi said. He stressed the need for probate registry staff to stop masquerading as lawyers.
The SAN further called on judiciary personnel to accord due respect to judicial officers, legal practitioners and court users. He also urged lawyers to reciprocate respect to judiciary workers.
NBA Ibadan Chairman, Mrs. Folasade Aladeniyi said the outreach aims to promote standard practices within Oyo State’s justice system. She invited JUSUN members to report erring lawyers found contravening professional ethics.
JUSUN Chairman Mr. Saheed Amoo thanked NBA Ibadan for the legal clinic and assured close collaboration between both unions to enforce discipline.
The NBA law week from December 1–6 also featured lectures, rights awareness campaigns, awards event and sporting activities.
