[DOWNLOAD IN FULL] Labour Party Finally Receives Supreme Court Judgment, Alleges Breach Of Fair Hearing
Nearly two months after the Supreme Court affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s victory, the Labour Party (LP) has finally received a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the apex court’s judgment dismissing its petition.
However, the CTC has sparked controversy and allegations of rights violations
Surprisingly, Justice Inyang Okoro’s lead judgment spans just three pages while supporting judgments range from 4 to 41 pages. LP had previously accused the court of not delivering a substantive verdict.
In a new statement, LP Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk alleges the Supreme Court took an “extraordinary, terribly shocking, and unacceptable” position by stating its decision would abide by the judgment in PDP’s separate appeal.
Detailing differences between the appeals, LP argues issues like forfeiture of narcotics funds and failure to meet electoral law requirements were unique to its petition. It claims over 18,000 blurred result sheets were also ignored by lower courts.
Decrying the Supreme Court’s alleged refusal to furnish a timely CTC despite multiple requests, LP concluded this breach of Section 294(1) violates constitutional fair hearing rights.
Legal experts say while combining decisions on connected appeals is not uncommon, the Court must still render reasoned judgments to ensure justice.
As controversies rage over the apex court’s perceived opacity and haste, time will tell whether LP’s demands spark a review or if the judiciary’s reputation will suffer yet another blow.
