NBA Launches Investigation Into Lawyer Filmed Assaulting Wife
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has opened an investigation into a viral video depicting a lawyer physically attacking his wife.
The disturbing footage shows Uyo-based lawyer Ekere S. Ebong repeatedly slapping and beating a woman identified as his wife.
In response, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau SAN has instructed the Uyo Branch to investigate Ebong for professional misconduct. The NBA’s Human Rights Committee will also examine the incident to potentially aid criminal prosecution.
“The NBA condemns in unequivocal terms any form of violence against person, including domestic violence,” said NBA spokesman Akorede Habeeb Lawal. He invited victims to report abuse at local NBA branches nationwide.
Maikyau said the NBA “does not tolerate acts of violence, brutality or abuse of any kind against any person.” He affirmed the NBA’s commitment to prosecuting offending lawyers and providing support services to survivors of domestic violence.
Ebong faces imminent disciplinary action and criminal charges over the filmed assault. But the NBA emphasized suspects are innocent until proven guilty, and findings will depend on the ongoing investigation.
