Tobenna Erojikwe Joins Other Members Of The National Association Of Catholic Lawyers At Kirikiri Correctional Centre For Prison Apostolate Mass And Events.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos brought some Christmas cheer to inmates at the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre this week. Archbishop Adewale Martins celebrated a Holy Mass for the inmates, attended by Tobenna Erojikwe, a partner at The Law Crest LLP and Chairman, Governing Board of the NBA-ICLE.
The Mass was part of the Prison Apostolate programme of the Archdiocese, which provides spiritual and material support to inmates at correctional facilities across Lagos State. After the mass, inmates showcased their talents in music and drama at a brief reception.
“The Prison Apostolate of the Church is one of the most important Apostolates of the Church, and one is excited about the consistency with
which the Church approaches corporal works of mercy, said Tobenna Erojikwe in remarks at the event on December 26. “Ministering to those in prison is a vital part of the church’s mission.”
Tobenna Erojikwe, who hosted the annual retreat of the National Executive Committee of the National Association of Catholic Lawyers (NACL) earlier this year, praised the uplifting effect of the mass and talent show. “This event really fostered an environment of positivity and engagement for the inmates,” he noted.
The heads of the Kirikiri Medium and Badagry Correctional Facilities also delivered remarks thanking the Catholic Church for enhancing inmate welfare through the Prison Apostolate. The Church provides spiritual guidance, counselling, skills acquisition programmes, and material supplies like food and toiletries.
The talent show following the mass allowed inmates to showcase their creative abilities. Music, dance, poetry recitals, and drama sketches by inmate performers entertained the audience and provided a rehabilitative creative outlet.
Tobenna Erojikwe said the church’s corporal works of mercy shine a light of hope for the inmates. “The Catholic Church is truly living Christ’s message of caring for the imprisoned and forgotten in our society,” he concluded.
Through its Prison Apostolate, the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos continues to transform lives behind bars through spiritual nourishment and acts of mercy.
