NBA Condemns Detention Of Lagos Lawyer, Demands Probe

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the alleged unlawful detention of its member, 36-year old Lagos lawyer Olumide Sonupe, by the police on December 30th, 2023.

Olumide was hospitalized upon release on January 1st after spending two nights in detention at Moshalashi Police Station, Alimosho. He was seeking bail for a client when he was accused of speaking to the client without an officer’s presence.

The NBA has demanded that CCTV footage from the police station be released to confirm events. NBA spokesperson Akorede Habeeb-Lawal stated that an official complaint was received and a probe ordered, alongside the Ikeja Branch Chairman. A petition has also been sent to the Lagos CP and Police Service Commission over the conduct of the involved officers.

The NBA asserts that a civilian cannot assault police officers in a station. It wants a transparent investigation with findings made public. Stern disciplinary action has been sought against erring officers.

The association said it will fully back Olumide and ensure justice, while condemning increased police harassment of not just lawyers but all citizens.

Olumide’s brother confirmed his discharge from hospital on January 12th. The Ikeja Branch Chairman promised comments soon. A human rights advocate expects strong action from the NBA to serve justice in this case.
