Fire Guts Sokoto Central Market, Destroys Shops, Motorcycles

There was a fire incident in the early hours of Monday at the Sokoto Central market along Kilgori Road in Minanata.

A trader in the market who confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on the phone said the fire spread from a rubbish dump in the market and could not be put out in time because most of the shop owners were at available when it started, and this exacerbated the problem.

“I also heard the news around 6:30 am when I was sleeping and I immediately left for the market to be sure my shop was not included.

“It was in the market people later said the fire was from those boys burning the refuse and this has been said to be the cause of the fire, according to what I heard,” the trader told SaharaReporters.

“The area of the market mostly affected is Kofar Garri (where they sell garri). Many shops and motorcycles were damaged by the fire,” the trader added.

He added that the fire had been put out by the personnel of the federal and state fire services and many traders had resumed their daily routines.

In January 2021, a similar incident happened in the market. The fire reportedly started from a generator, razing many shops and properties.
