Court Fines Police Over Arrest Of Rivers Traditional Ruler
A High Court in Port Harcourt presided by Justice Awuma Oriye has ordered the police to pay N3m as compensation to the then-traditional ruler of Ekpeye, traditionally known as Eze Ekpeye Logbo, Kelvin Anugwo, for illegally arresting him on the 10th of September 2023 and detaining him for 82 days over the gruesome murder of late SP Bako Angbashim.
Justice Oriye while delivering his judgement further ordered the police to tender a public apology to the applicant in a national daily for breaching his fundamental rights.
The judge also issued an order of injunction restraining the police from further arresting, threatening, or harassing the applicant concerning the death of the late Bako Angbashim.
The traditional ruler was also awarded N200,000 as damages.
While speaking with journalists after the judgement, counsel to Eze Ekpeye Logbo, Ikashi Emehi described the judgement as justice for the Ekpeye people and urged them to stand strong.
