[FULL LIST] Fair Pay For Lawyers: NBA Sets Up 129 Committees To Implement New Remuneration Order
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has constituted Remuneration Committees in all 129 branches nationwide, following a resolution by its National Executive Council (NEC) during an extraordinary meeting on April 20, 2024, in Yola, Adamawa State.
The committees, each consisting of five members, including a chairman and a secretary, will be responsible for implementing the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order, 2023, at the branch level.
In a notice dated May 26, 2024, NBA President, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, announced the constitution of the committees and their mandate to ensure fair compensation for legal practitioners in accordance with the Remuneration Order. The order, which came into effect in 2023, aims to establish a standardized and transparent remuneration system for legal professionals in Nigeria.
To equip the committee members with the necessary knowledge and tools to carry out their duties effectively, the NBA also announced plans to hold a workshop on the Remuneration Order, 2023. The workshop, scheduled for a later date, will provide a platform for committee members to familiarize themselves with the order’s provisions and discuss strategies for its successful implementation.
Maikyau thanked the committee members for accepting the call to serve and urged all NBA members to cooperate with the committees in their efforts to ensure fair remuneration for legal practitioners. He emphasized the importance of the Remuneration Order in promoting the welfare of legal professionals and advancing the legal profession in Nigeria.
The constitution of the Remuneration Committees and the upcoming workshop demonstrate the NBA’s commitment to addressing the long-standing issue of inadequate compensation for legal practitioners. As the committees begin their work, legal professionals across the country can anticipate a more equitable and transparent remuneration system that acknowledges and rewards their contributions to the justice system.
The NBA’s proactive approach to implementing the Remuneration Order is expected to have a positive impact on the legal profession and serve as an example for other professional bodies in Nigeria.
