Unfair Conference Fees With No Returns: NBA Auchi Branch Boycotts 2024 AGC Over High Fees
The Auchi branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced its decision to boycott the forthcoming Annual General Conference scheduled for August 2024.
The resolution was reached during a meeting held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, where members expressed their dissatisfaction with the National Executive Council’s decision to increase the conference registration fee without providing conference materials such as bags to participants.
The Auchi Bar, in solidarity with the Ikeja and Warri branches, believes that the exorbitant fee is unjustifiable, considering the lack of tangible benefits for members attending the conference. The branch maintains that paying such a high fee without receiving anything in return is unacceptable and goes against the principles of fairness and transparency.
The decision to boycott the conference comes as a protest against what the branches perceive as a disregard for the welfare and interests of NBA members. The Auchi, Ikeja, and Warri branches are calling on the National Executive Council to reconsider its decision and provide a more reasonable and inclusive fee structure that takes into account the needs and expectations of all members.
The boycott is expected to have a significant impact on the upcoming conference, as the three branches represent a substantial number of NBA members. The absence of these members may result in a reduced attendance and could potentially affect the overall success of the event.
The NBA leadership is yet to respond to the boycott announcement officially. However, it is hoped that the National Executive Council will engage in dialogue with the protesting branches to find a mutually acceptable solution that addresses the concerns raised and ensures the full participation of all members in the annual conference.
