Tinubu Government Mobilises Military Personnel to Eagle Square After Police Faceoff With Protesters
The Nigerian government has mobilised military personnel to the Eagle Square after protesters clashed with the police.
The #EndBadGovernance protesters initially gathered at the MKO Abiola Stadium but later moved to the Eagle Square on Thursday.
Earlier, a court had ordered that protests should not be held at Eagle Square.
However, a police team police led by the commissioner of police in the FCT ordered the protesters who had gathered outside the stadium to move inside the facility for their protest.
The protesters took issue with the directive, pointing out that they were already assembled at the stadium as instructed by the court.
The situation was further exacerbated by reports that some protesters, unaware of the venue change from Eagle Square to National Stadium, were attacked. This sparked outrage among the protesters gathered at the stadium, who subsequently marched to Eagle Square in a show of solidarity with their fellow demonstrators who had been targeted by government forces.
Earlier, President Bola Tinubu’s government was warned against deploying soldiers for the protests, especially in the capital territory.
