The #EndBadGovernance protest in Kano State took an unexpected turn on Monday as demonstrators brandished the Russian flag and carried banners with the same emblem.
The protesters, primarily young boys, were seen chanting in Hausa and running through the streets, signaling a fresh development in the ongoing unrest. This follows the Kano State Government’s recent decision to ease the curfew imposed due to the protests.
On Saturday, Kano’s Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, announced that the curfew would be relaxed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., a shift from the 24-hour curfew initially enforced after the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests turned violent.
Dantiye emphasized that the curfew adjustment was made to allow residents to conduct their daily activities while maintaining the government’s commitment to security. He also expressed condolences from Governor Abba Yusuf to those who suffered losses during the protests, which included attacks on the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park.
The protest, which began as a demonstration against governance issues and economic hardship, saw severe disruptions in Kano, including the looting and arson at the NCC’s ICT center. Reports indicate that around 269 suspects have been arrested in connection with the looting.
The state government remains vigilant, with plans to further review the security situation and adjust measures as necessary.
