EFCC’s X (Twitter) Handle Mysteriously Disappears, Shocking Anti-Graft Agency
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) expressed shock and confusion as its official X (formerly Twitter) handle abruptly vanished from the social media platform on Tuesday afternoon.
The disappearance of the account has left the anti-graft agency scrambling for answers.
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s spokesperson, initially attributed the issue to a potential network problem when contacted by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ). However, upon further investigation, it became apparent that the account’s disappearance was not a mere technical glitch.
A search conducted on X for the EFCC’s account yielded the message, “This account doesn’t exist. Try searching for another.” This indication suggests that the account may have been either banned by X or deliberately deleted by the account owner.
In response to the mysterious disappearance, Dele Oyewale told FIJ, “Are you sure? Let me find out from our Information and Technology unit.” He later added, “It is just a network issue. Our IT people are attending to it and it would be back up soon.”
However, as of the time of filing this report, the EFCC’s X handle remains unavailable, casting doubts on the spokesperson’s initial assessment of the situation. Dele Oyewale has yet to provide any further updates on the matter.
The EFCC, along with many other Nigerian ministries and agencies, relies on X and other social media platforms to keep citizens informed about their activities, programmes, and policies. The sudden disappearance of the EFCC’s X handle has raised concerns about the accessibility and transparency of the agency’s communications.
According to X’s rules, account owners have the ability to deactivate their accounts at any time, resulting in the page being rendered as unavailable. The reasons behind the EFCC’s account disappearance remain unclear, leaving both the agency and the public seeking answers.
