NIWA takes Shell to court over N4bn debt

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has filed a lawsuit against Shell Development Company, an international oil company, over a N4 billion debt incurred from transporting crude and refined petroleum products through its pipelines.

According to NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebimiji, Shell’s divestment from offshore operations necessitates immediate action to recover the debt. Oyebimiji emphasized that NIWA has exhausted all avenues for an amicable resolution and has informed the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy to collaborate with the Ministry of Energy to address the issue

Oyebimiji stated, “We’re taking Shell to court over their indebtedness. With their divestment, we must collect our money before they leave.” He noted that his predecessor had previously attempted to resolve the matter without success, leaving NIWA no choice but to seek legal action.

This development is part of NIWA’s ongoing efforts to address indebtedness issues with various oil companies. The agency seeks to recover its debts and ensure that companies operating within the sector meet their financial obligations.
