Nigerian Exam Body, JAMB Invigilator Accused Of Sexually Harassing 16-Year-Old Candidate During Examination
Mutiu Olayemi, an invigilator for the recent Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), has been accused of sexually harassing a 16-year-old student, Chizitere Obioha.
The accusation led to the withholding of her result due to alleged examination malpractice
Chizitere’s father, Onyebuchi Obioha, petitioned the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, seeking their intervention in the matter. The petition was presented last Tuesday by Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South.
According to the petition, Olayemi allegedly approached Chizitere during the exam, asking for her phone number. When she refused, her result was withheld on the grounds of malpractice, as indicated in the report by the invigilators.
Chizitere took her exam at Wisdom House CBT Centre in Ogba, Lagos, on April 22, 2024. Her father stated that upon enquiring about her result, JAMB claimed it had been withheld due to malpractice.
“I want to bring to your notice a suspicion that we have relating to this case. We are very certain that our daughter is being punished for a crime she did not commit,” Mr Obioha said in the petition.
He further explained that Olayemi gave his daughter a piece of paper with his phone number, requesting her to call him. Chizitere handed the paper to her father, who then called the number to confront Olayemi.
“I called the number immediately and asked him why he gave a little girl of 16 years his number to call him. He immediately denied it and said that it was a wrong number,” Obioha stated.
In response to the allegations, Olayemi denied the accusations in a telephone interview, stating, “I didn’t ‘toast’ anybody during the examination or give my phone number to any candidate. I’m already in Abuja as directed by JAMB Abuja to defend myself.”
On the examination malpractice allegation, Olayemi claimed he was not responsible for the report, stating that it was written by the Resident Monitor.
