‘Youths need technology skills for global competitiveness’

Youths need skills to enhance their competitiveness in the technology sector, Algorand Foundation, global blockchain organisation, has said.

Speaking at the launch of Algorand Hackathon: Nigeria summit  in Jalingo, Taraba State, Country Head of Algorand in Nigeria, Benjamin Onuoha, said the event attracted tech experts from the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory.

He said states must invest in technological advancement of youths, noting empowering them with technical know-how is key for them to create solutions for local and national challenges.

“A state seeking progress must equip its youths with skills to compete well in the global technology ecosystem,” Onuoha said.

He said participants will develop blockchain-based solutions that allow individuals to control their digital identities independent of centralised entities. They can create innovative solutions to improve supply chain transparency, security, and efficiency.

Onuoha said participants would design the next generation of fast, transparent, and accessible payment platforms, promoting financial inclusion, regardless of their location or economic status. He noted that substantial prizes and opportunities await winners.

Commissioner for Digital Economy and Innovation, Gideon Nonso, said hosting the hackathon demonstrates the state’s commitment to supporting its youth and embracing blockchain technology to enhance transparency and efficiency in governance.

He added that Governor Agbu Kefas is keen to partner organisations to boost technological advancement in young people.

Algorand Foundation has previously collaborated with states to organise training to foster digital literacy and empowering young Nigerians in blockchain technology and software development. Sponsored by the foundation, these equip youth with skills and expertise to drive digitalisation and blockchain adoption.
