No fewer than 22 Illegal goal miners are feared dead in a gold mining pit on the border between Taraba and Adamawa States, SaharaReporters has learnt.
The gold mining site is located at Jamtari village in the Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba State. Jamtari borders Toungo Local Government Area in Adamawa State.
An eyewitness, Bala Komsiri, told SaharaReporters on Thursday that over 20 Illegal miners were trapped when the pit collapsed.
“I think all the miners, numbering about 22 may have died. They were mining gold when they were trapped in the pit,” he added.
The spokesperson for the police in Adamawa State, Suleiman Nguroje, has confirmed the incident, saying, “recently two different mining pit collapses were reported, killing a total of 10 persons.”
Nguroje, however assured that the police were working with officials at the Gumti National Park to get illegal miners arrested and to clean up the area.
