Husband Seeks Justice After ATBU Lecturer Harassed Wife
The husband of an Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi (ATBU) student, Jafaru Buba, has called on the institution to investigate allegations of sexual harassment against a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering of the university.
Buba, speaking to journalists in Bauchi, disclosed that his lawyers had filed a petition against the lecturer with the ATBU Vice-Chancellor, Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The petition, filed by the complainant’s lawyer, Barrister Mohammed Sani, alleged that the lecturer repeatedly harassed the student by inviting her to his office and sending inappropriate WhatsApp messages despite knowing she was married.
When rebuffed, the lecturer allegedly threatened to fail her and jeopardise her graduation from the M.Eng. programme she enrolled.
The complainant’s counsel attached WhatsApp chats as evidence, urging the university to conduct a thorough investigation and take action to deter similar misconduct.
Meanwhile, the university’s public relations officer, Zailani Bappah, said he was unaware of the case but would confirm with management.
Attempts to reach the lecturer for comments were unsuccessful, though an associate claims the lecturer denies the allegations.
The case, filed at Bauchi State High Court 7, has been adjourned to November 27, 2027, for further hearing.
