Tensions Rise as Rivers State FAAC Funds Blocked Amid Fubara-Wike Feud

The Nigerian government has confirmed that the October 2024 Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue payment to Rivers State has been halted, following a Federal High Court order. This development emerges amidst a political rift between Rivers State Governor Simi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The Spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), Bawa Mokwa, revealed to Daily Post that the federal government is complying with the court directive. Mokwa stated, “The federal government will obey the court order on Rivers State’s allocation until there is a contrary ruling.”

The delay in disbursement follows a decision by Justice Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, who on October 30, 2024, barred the Central Bank of Nigeria and the federal government from allocating funds to Rivers State. This injunction stemmed from a suit filed by a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, arguing that Governor Fubara’s administration had not complied with a court order requiring the re-presentation of the 2024 appropriation bill.

Political Backdrop:

The ongoing crisis in Rivers State began when Governor Fubara fell out with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The rift has escalated, with the Amaewhule-led faction, allegedly backed by Wike, challenging the governor’s authority. The FAAC revenue blockage adds another dimension to this political turmoil, leaving the oil-rich state in a precarious position.

Current Status:

While the FAAC allocation process for October is still underway, Rivers State remains in limbo regarding its share. The federal government has reiterated its commitment to adhering to legal directives until a resolution is reached. This situation underscores the broader implications of political conflicts and judicial intervention on state finances and governance.
