Insecurity: ‘Obey Constitutional Duties’, Afe Babalola Tells, Police, Military
The legal icon made this call in Ado-Ekiti during the 4th Aare Afe Babalola Distinguished Personality Lecture Series (DPLS) titled “Insecurity, Leadership and Peace Building in Nigeria: Dynamics and Challenges”.
Speaking with journalists, the legal icon solicited constitutional changes and urged Nigerians to be united in ensuring order, orderliness and discipline in the country.
The constitutional responsibility of the military is to ensure and maintain the territorial integrity of a state, while that of the police is to ensure obedience to law and order.
In his lecture, the commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Major General John Ochai solicited for strengthened police capacity, promotion of inclusive governance, support community-led initiatives, and leverage of international support, in order to combat insecurity.
He also highlighted community engagement, leadership and peace-building, and Inclusive governance, among others, as some of the major strategies to fight insurgency.
Another highlight of the event was the presentation of an institutional 2-star general plaque to Afe Babalola by the Commandant of NDA, for his contributions to nation-building.
