Prof. M. Yakubu’s Alleged Death In London Hospital False, INEC Warns Against Misinformation
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed circulating social media reports alleging the death of its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a London hospital.
The commission described the narrative, which first surfaced on Monday, December 9, 2024, as baseless and urged the public to disregard it.
In a press release issued on Saturday, December 14, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, clarified that Prof. Yakubu is alive, in good health, and has not visited London in over two years.
Prof. Yakubu actively participated in a series of public engagements this past week, including an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Wednesday, December 11, and a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday, December 12. Both events received extensive media coverage, further debunking the false claims.
INEC noted that similar rumors were circulated in 2021, accusing “mischief-makers” of reviving the baseless story three years later. The commission criticized those spreading such falsehoods for ignoring the societal harm and distress these rumors can cause.
INEC reiterated its commitment to working with credible media professionals to counter fake news and protect societal harmony.
