Matawalle Assures Justice for Victims of Sokoto Airstrike as Investigation Begins
The Federal Government has pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation into an airstrike that tragically claimed the lives of 10 people in the villages of Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa in Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State. This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, during a condolence visit to Governor Ahmed Aliyu in Sokoto on Friday.
Matawalle, who was sent to convey the Federal Government’s condolences, expressed deep regret over the loss of lives and assured that justice would prevail. He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians. In his statement, Matawalle condemned the actions of terrorists, whom he described as disruptors of peace, and reiterated the government’s determination to confront them decisively.
Federal Government’s Commitment to Safety and Justice
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesman, Abubakar Bawa, Matawalle also commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his proactive efforts in fighting banditry and other forms of criminality in Sokoto State. The minister acknowledged that Aliyu was the only governor who had formally requested a military base in the state, and assured the governor that the military would continue to support Sokoto in its ongoing efforts to curb insecurity.
He further emphasized that President Bola Tinubu was deeply concerned about the airstrike tragedy, which he described as “unfortunate,” and had personally directed the investigation into the matter. The Federal Government will ensure that all necessary steps are taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
Erroneous Information Blamed for Wrong Bombing
In explaining the cause of the tragedy, Matawalle attributed the wrong bombing to erroneous information available to the military at the time of the operation. He explained that intelligence reports had mistakenly identified the area as being controlled by Lakurawa bandits, a notorious group in the region. However, the airstrike led to the loss of innocent lives in villages that were not the intended target.
In response, Governor Ahmed Aliyu called for improved military intelligence gathering and better surveillance systems to prevent future incidents of mistaken targeting. The governor emphasized the importance of having accurate and reliable information before any military action is taken.
