Governor Nwifuru Urges Stakeholders to Collaborate for Peace in Ebonyi Communal Crisis
Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has called for peace between the warring communities of Effuim and Ezza Effuim in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, amidst the ongoing communal conflict. Governor Nwifuru expressed the state government’s readiness to resolve the crisis impartially and urged all stakeholders in the local government area to work together to restore lasting peace.
The governor made the appeal during a Christmas visit by the people of Ohaukwu to his hometown, Oferekpe Agbaja. He emphasized that the people of Effuim and Ezza Effuim are essentially one family, and his administration is committed to bringing about a peaceful resolution to their disputes.
Regarding those incarcerated in connection with the communal clashes, Governor Nwifuru acknowledged requests for their release. He explained that he had directed a peace committee, led by Ambassador Frank Ogbuewu, to review the cases of all detainees from the conflict. However, preliminary investigations revealed that some individuals in detention were falsely claiming to be arrested due to the communal conflict, when in fact they were detained for other criminal activities.
Governor Nwifuru assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted before any decisions on releasing the detainees are made. Once the committee completes its work, those deemed eligible will be released.
He also commended the people of Ohaukwu for their continued support and collaboration with the government in delivering good governance.
Earlier, Senator Anthony Agbo, leader of the delegation, thanked the governor for his development efforts in Ohaukwu, including the appointment of local sons and daughters to strategic positions. He also urged the governor to consider the release of individuals who have been detained for nearly four years due to the ongoing crisis.
