Kano State Introduces Health Insurance for Inmates: A Game Changer for Custodial Welfare

The Kano State government has made a significant move by enrolling inmates in custodial facilities under the State’s Health Contributory Scheme, granting them health insurance coverage. This initiative ensures that inmates will now have access to both basic and comprehensive healthcare services while in custody.

Rahila Aliyu Muktar, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KACHMA), revealed this development during a visit to the Controller of Corrections for the Kano State Command, Ado Inuwa. A statement from the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nasarawa, highlighted that Muktar reassured the Controller of the government’s commitment to providing continuous medical support for all inmates.

The Controller of Corrections expressed his gratitude to the state government for this support, noting that it would motivate inmates to become more productive and law-abiding citizens after their release. He also emphasized that the health and welfare of inmates are vital for efficient custodial management, as well as for the successful reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of offenders back into society.
