Osigwe: NBA’s Focus for 2025 on Justice, Human Rights, and Strengthening Lawyers’ Welfare

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe (SAN), has reaffirmed the association’s unwavering commitment to advancing justice, promoting judicial reforms, and improving the welfare of lawyers in the country.

In his New Year message on Wednesday in Abuja, Osigwe highlighted that the welfare of lawyers remains a key priority for the NBA as it continues its advocacy efforts for a fairer and more equitable legal system.

“As we proudly step into the year 2025, I am honoured to welcome you all to a new era of limitless possibilities, reflection, gratitude, and renewed determination,” Osigwe began, noting that the year 2024 had been transformative, filled with challenges and victories that strengthened the Bar. “Together, we have confronted and overcome significant national issues, championed the cause of justice, advocated for the rule of law, and stood firm in protecting the rights and welfare of our members across the country,” he said.

Osigwe expressed optimism for the future, stating that 2025 would be a defining year for both the NBA and the broader legal profession in Nigeria. He emphasized the association’s continued focus on judicial reforms, strengthening the independence of the judiciary, and addressing systemic challenges that delay justice.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing judicial reforms, strengthening the independence of the judiciary, and addressing systemic challenges that hinder the swift and fair dispensation of justice,” Osigwe declared. He also assured that the NBA would continue to fight for better opportunities for all members, particularly young lawyers, ensuring that they receive the respect and dignity they deserve.

The NBA President also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advocating for the rule of law and human rights. “This year will be marked by intensified advocacy for the rule of law and human rights. We will remain at the forefront of holding authorities accountable and ensuring that citizens’ rights are upheld,” he said.

Osigwe highlighted that the NBA would address issues such as police brutality, unlawful detentions, and other human rights abuses while collaborating with stakeholders to promote a just society. He also called for unity within the Bar, emphasizing that it is the cornerstone of the association’s strength and success.

“The unity of the Bar is crucial to our success,” Osigwe noted. “We must foster collaboration, dialogue, and mutual respect to overcome the challenges facing the profession and the nation.”

The NBA President encouraged members of the association to continue to embody integrity, resilience, and hope, setting an example for Nigeria as a whole. He also acknowledged the contributions of those who have helped shape the association’s progress, thanking them for their dedication, ideas, and hard work.

As the NBA embarks on its mission for a more just and prosperous future, Osigwe’s message sets the tone for a year of continued advocacy, unity, and progress within the legal profession.
