Osun 2025 Budget: N2.5 Billion Set Aside for Meals and Refreshments, Raises Eyebrows

A recent review of Osun State’s proposed 2025 budget has raised concerns, particularly over the allocation of N2.5 billion for refreshments and meals. According to the budget document, the state spent a total of N527 million on refreshments and meals from January to September 2024. For 2025, the figure has been increased significantly, with N2.5 billion earmarked for similar purposes—an increase from the N1.8 billion allocated for refreshments in 2024.

In addition to the refreshments budget, the 2025 proposal includes N1.662 billion for honorariums and sitting allowances, surpassing the N1.3 billion set aside for these expenses in 2024. Between January and September 2024, Osun spent N764 million on honorariums and sitting allowances, indicating a continued rise in these expenses.

Other notable items in the 2025 budget include N2.7 billion for publicity and advertisements, as well as N446.5 million for medical expenses and support, which is lower than the N693 million allocated for healthcare-related costs in 2024. The welfare package for 2025 sees a significant increase, with a budget of N15.6 billion, up from N9.1 billion in 2024.

Subscription fees to professional bodies have also seen a sharp increase, with N11.3 billion earmarked in 2025, compared to N266.8 million in 2024. Other budget allocations include N862 million for sporting activities, up from N820.7 million in 2024, and a rise in the budget for teaching and laboratory costs, set at N344 million for 2025 compared to N279.5 million in 2024.

Notably, the budget also includes N421.9 million for election logistics, which is nearly double the N188.8 million allocated for the same purpose in 2024.

These allocations come at a time when the state is facing serious development challenges, such as inadequate access to clean water and underdeveloped healthcare infrastructure. Critics argue that the substantial amount set aside for refreshments, allowances, and publicity may divert attention from addressing more pressing issues affecting the people of Osun.
