At least eight people sustained various injuries after a Molue commercial bus crashed into the road median along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway at the Ahmadiya axis on Friday.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident in a statement, explaining that the accident was caused when the driver of the bus lost control while trying to avoid colliding with pedestrians standing at the bus stop.
Taofiq stated, “The accident was triggered when the vehicle, registered as KTU 801 XM, lost control due to excessive speed, reportedly caused by driver impatience.”
The bus driver, in an attempt to avoid hitting another commercial bus and pedestrians, veered off the road, crashing into the expressway median and overturning. As a result, eight people, including five men and three women, sustained varying degrees of injuries. Among the injured was the bus driver, who suffered a fractured left arm.
The LASTMA spokesperson confirmed that the victims were immediately rushed to Ile-Epo General Hospital following the swift intervention of LASTMA and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) officials. The officers carried out a coordinated rescue operation, ensuring that all victims received urgent medical attention at the hospital.
In a response, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed his sympathies to the victims and stressed the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. He emphasized that speed limits should always be followed, and urged both commercial and private vehicle operators to regularly maintain their vehicles, particularly ensuring that brake systems are in good condition to prevent avoidable accidents.
