Reno Omokri, a renowned author and former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has declared that Peter Obi is currently the most formidable opposition figure in Nigeria. Omokri made this assertion on Friday in a Facebook post, claiming that Obi has outlasted others who contested in the 2023 presidential election.
While acknowledging Obi’s flaws, Omokri expressed admiration for his perseverance despite significant obstacles. He stated, “Peter Obi is currently the Number One opposition figure in Nigeria. Bar none. Anybody in any opposition party who thinks that he is bigger than Obi right now is just deluded.”
He also pointed out that Obi’s influence in the opposition had already led to the political retirement of some figures, though they remained unaware due to financial support propping up their political careers.
Omokri, however, urged Obi to be less Igbo-centric in his approach, suggesting that he should appeal to his supporters to use more persuasive language rather than abusive terms. He also addressed a past controversial comment made by Obi, urging him to apologize for the “Yes Daddy” and “religious war” remarks aimed at the Muslim Ummah, which Omokri believes could be Obi’s Achilles heel.
Despite these criticisms, Obi has maintained that he is more focused on seeing Nigeria succeed than on becoming president. However, he has not ruled out the possibility of contesting in the 2027 elections.
