A tragic incident occurred in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Thursday, when a young woman, Ifeoluwa Adekalu, was fatally shot by an accidentally discharged bullet from a policeman’s gun at the Okela Police Station.
The police officer, who was on a visit to the station, reportedly discharged the firearm in a moment of celebration after receiving the news of a colleague’s promotion. However, the bullet accidentally struck the woman, leading to her death.
There has been some confusion about the exact location of the victim. Some reports suggest she was hit in front of a saloon across from the police station while returning from paying her rent, while others indicate she was at the station to visit her husband, who was in detention at the time.
Ifeoluwa, a mother of one, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries from the gunshot.
In response to the incident, the Ekiti State Police Commissioner, AIG Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the shooting and stated that the officer responsible had been disarmed and detained. The unnamed officer is expected to undergo interrogation in accordance with the Nigerian Police Act.
