Power Rationing to Hit Abuja: AEDC Customers Brace for Scheduled Outages
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that residents of several areas in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), serviced by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), will face power rationing from January 6 to January 20. The announcement was made by Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, on Saturday in Abuja.
The power rationing is linked to the ongoing road dualization project by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) along the Apo axis. As part of this development, TCN will need to relocate eight critical transmission towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132 kV line (Outer Southern Expressway route), which will impact power distribution in various parts of Abuja.
Affected areas include Kubwa, Karu, Maraba, Nyanya, Masaka, Keffi, Kukwaba, and the Apo Mechanic village. Additionally, parts of Lugbe, Trademore Estate, Pyakasa, Sabon Lugbe, Chika, and the Alaita axis will experience intermittent power outages.
TCN has outlined that the power outage will occur daily from 9 am to 4 pm, starting January 6 and continuing until January 20. This planned interruption is necessary to facilitate the dismantling and construction of the transmission towers and the restringing of power cables. The completion of this work will restore bulk power supply to the Apo Transmission Substation from the Gwagwalada Substation.
While the power interruption is a crucial part of the road construction project, TCN has expressed regret for any inconvenience it may cause and assured customers that power supply will resume promptly once the work is completed.
AEDC had also issued a prior notice, alerting customers about the upcoming power disruptions in certain areas of its franchise from January 6 to January 21.
