Tragic Explosion in Abuja: Two Dead and Several Injured in IED Blast at Islamic School

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the deaths of two individuals following an explosion at Tsangayar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in the Byazhin area of Abuja. The explosion, which occurred around 11:00 am on Monday, has raised serious concerns over the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the capital.

In a statement issued by the police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the command detailed that a distress call was received from a local community leader, prompting an immediate response. Police operatives, along with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, were deployed to the scene. The area was promptly cordoned off to ensure public safety and allow for a thorough investigation.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that three men from Katsina visited the owner of the school, Malam Adamu Ashimu. It is suspected that they brought the explosive device with them,” Adeh explained. The explosion occurred while two of the men were reportedly tampering with the IED on the school’s veranda, resulting in their deaths. The third man and a female trader sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment under police guard.

The FCT Bomb Squad confirmed that the incident involved an IED explosion, and remnants of the device have been recovered. The school’s owner, Malam Adamu Ashimu, has been taken into custody for questioning, while investigations continue.

The Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or items that may resemble explosives to the police. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
