Driver Dies in Lagos Intra-City Bus Crash Due to Brake Failure

A yet-to-be-identified driver of a Lagos Intra-City bus tragically lost his life in a collision with a moving long truck on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According to a statement from the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, the accident occurred near the state Secretariat, heading toward Otedola Bridge. The crash involved a mini-bus, which collided with the truck after experiencing brake failure due to excessive speeding.

The impact of the collision was severe, trapping the bus driver within the wreckage. Fortunately, all passengers in the mini-bus were safely rescued and emerged unscathed.

Adebayo praised the prompt and coordinated efforts of LASTMA officers, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who worked tirelessly to free the driver. Sadly, despite their best efforts, the driver was found dead at the scene. His body was subsequently handed over to FRSC personnel for further processing.

Security officers from the Alausa Police Division also provided security during the rescue operation, ensuring a safe and efficient operation.

In the aftermath of the accident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, warned against the dangers of excessive speeding and emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. He also called for regular vehicle maintenance to prevent accidents caused by mechanical failure.

“This heartbreaking incident serves as a harsh reminder of the consequences of reckless driving,” Bakare-Oki stated. “We urge all road users to prioritize safety, follow traffic rules, and exercise caution to prevent such tragedies.”

LASTMA also extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased driver and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer roads across Lagos.
