Fire Guts Shanties in Surulere, Lagos; No Casualties Reported

A fire has gutted a row of makeshift shanty structures in the Surulere area of Lagos State. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, noting that no casualties or injuries were recorded at the scene.

In a statement released on Saturday, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, provided details of the response. The agency received distress calls through its 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines at 1:18 AM, prompting the activation of its response team from Onipanu.

Upon arrival at the scene at 1:31 AM, emergency responders found that the fire had engulfed a row of makeshift shanty structures situated beside a canal. Initial investigations indicated that the fire started in one of the rooms and rapidly spread to other rooms in the row.

Quick Response Prevents Casualties

LASEMA’s team, along with other emergency responders, worked together to bring the blaze under control. Fortunately, the prompt action of the emergency teams ensured that no casualties or injuries occurred during the incident.

“The fire has been extinguished. Dampening down, search, and rescue operations have been concluded,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stated, confirming that the situation had been successfully managed.
