Kogi’s N7 Billion Healthcare Revamp: 88 New PHCs to Boost Access to Quality Services

The Kogi State Government is set to invest over N7 billion to revamp additional 88 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across all 21 local government areas in the state.

Governor Ahmed Ododo announced this at a ceremony in Lokoja, where he officially handed over the sites of the 88 PHCs to contractors. Represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, the governor outlined that the revitalization of these PHCs follows the commencement of rehabilitation work on over 70 other centres, which are at various stages of completion after being approved by the state government in March 2024.

Ododo explained that the project aims to upgrade more than 150 Primary Healthcare Centres in the state to functional health facilities. This initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare access for all residents.

“As we step into the New Year 2025, we are proud to launch a groundbreaking initiative—the upgrade of 88 additional Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state, complementing the ongoing upgrade of 70 PHCs to functional Level-2 facilities,” the governor said. “This marks another bold step towards achieving effective healthcare delivery and universal health coverage for our people.”

The project, with invaluable support from the World Bank, underscores the Kogi State Government’s dedication to enhancing citizens’ healthcare services. The N7 billion investment is part of the administration’s broader efforts to ensure equitable healthcare access throughout the state.

Ododo also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing the health and wellbeing of ordinary Nigerians, particularly those in rural areas. Additionally, the governor commended the efforts of former Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration for laying the groundwork for these healthcare advancements.

The governor urged contractors involved in the project to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and ensure completion within the next four months.
