In a remarkable display of compassion, Ondo State Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted amnesty to 40 prison inmates as part of his 60th birthday celebration, reflecting his deep commitment to justice reform and rehabilitation.
The Governor’s decision was announced in a statement by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo (SAN), who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. The announcement revealed that Aiyedatiwa’s gesture is rooted in a dedication to providing second chances and fostering a justice system that emphasizes rehabilitation over punishment.
According to the statement, the Governor has extended mercy to 40 convicts, with 15 of them set to be released from prison on January 12, 2025. In addition to the releases, several death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment, while others will see their sentences reduced, offering renewed hope for reintegration into society.
Aiyedatiwa’s actions align with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which grants the Governor the power to exercise the Prerogative of Mercy.
In a related development, former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, congratulated Aiyedatiwa on his milestone 60th birthday. Mimiko praised the Governor for his leadership and expressed hope for his continued success and guidance in his duties.
In a heartfelt statement, Mimiko wished Aiyedatiwa joy, wisdom, and strength as he embarks on his full four-year term in office, acknowledging the challenges ahead and offering prayers for divine assistance throughout his tenure.
“As you step into your Diamond Years, I wish you happiness and joy. May the Lord continue to bless you with wisdom and support you in your leadership journey,” Mimiko said, also praying for good health and peace of mind for the Governor.
