Former chairmen of local governments from the Osun West Senatorial District in the All Progressives Congress (APC) have appealed to the party leadership to zone the 2026 governorship ticket to their district, citing fairness, equity, and justice. The ex-council chairmen, under the umbrella of the Forum of Former Local Government Chairmen in Osun West, emphasized that Osun West remains the APC’s stronghold in the state.
They expressed confidence that selecting the governorship candidate from Osun West would provide the necessary momentum to unseat the incumbent, Governor Ademola Adeleke. The forum made this appeal during a press conference held on Wednesday at the APC Senatorial Secretariat in Iwo.
The forum, in a communiqué signed by 41 former chairmen, reaffirmed their unity and resoluteness in pushing for the district’s inclusion in the party’s plans for the next election. They also passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and commended President Bola Tinubu for his national reforms.
The communiqué read, in part, “The Forum met to review policies and politics in Nigeria, particularly in Osun State, to advise party organs and provide necessary support to ensure stability at the national level and success in future elections, including the 2026 governorship race.”
The forum praised the management of the APC under Oyetola and the State Chairman, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, for their effective party coordination and membership drive. The forum also acknowledged the rising political tension in the Osun APC over the choice of candidate for the 2026 governorship election.
They specifically called for fairness, asserting that the 2026 governorship ticket should remain within the Osun West Senatorial District. The forum emphasized that the district delivered six out of ten local governments in the 2022 governorship election, despite the fact that the opposition candidate hailed from Osun West.
The chairmen reaffirmed their resolve to present a competent, vibrant, and loyal party member who would further the policies of the APC and lead Osun State to prosperity. They also reiterated that their position on zoning should be communicated to key stakeholders in the party, including Chief Bisi Akande, former Governor Oyetola, and the Osun APC Elders Forum.
Concluding their statement, the forum expressed strong conviction that Osun West APC members would field a credible candidate capable of defeating Governor Adeleke and reclaiming power for the APC in the 2026 governorship election.
