Legal Expert Urges Emir of Kano to Step Aside Amid Controversial Emirate Dispute
Barrister Badamasi Sulaiman Gandu, a prominent Kano-based legal practitioner, has advised the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, to step away from the state and focus on seeking justice at the Supreme Court. Gandu offered this recommendation in an interview with GTR Hausa on Wednesday evening, stressing that this course of action would help maintain peace and stability within the state.
According to Gandu, the presence of two Emirs in Kano is untenable, especially following recent legal developments. He pointed out that the State House of Assembly amended the Emirate Law, which was then signed into law by the governor. In addition, the Court of Appeal had upheld the legality of these changes. In light of this, Gandu suggested that it would be in the Emir’s best interest to temporarily leave the state or even the country in order to focus on his legal fight at the Supreme Court.
The legal expert also urged the leadership of Kano State to ensure that the ongoing Emirate dispute does not become a distraction from the state’s development. He drew a stark contrast with Lagos State, which continues to thrive economically and socially. “Leaders should prioritize progress rather than allowing conflicts stirred by a few individuals to hinder the state’s growth,” Gandu said.
Further, Gandu reiterated that, according to the law, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, is the rightful ruler. He referred to the Court of Appeal’s ruling, which affirmed that the issue of the Emirate is within the jurisdiction of the state government.
In closing, Gandu expressed hope that all parties involved in the Emirate dispute would set aside personal interests and focus on the collective well-being of Kano State.
