Ejiofor Advocates for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release to Tackle Southeast Violence

Mike Ejiofor, a former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), has called on President Bola Tinubu to unconditionally release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Ejiofor emphasized that such a move could help resolve the ongoing insecurity challenges in the Southeast and create an opportunity for a political solution.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Thursday, Ejiofor urged the Tinubu administration to prioritize Nigeria’s security challenges, noting that while some issues require military action, others, like the situation in the Southeast, could benefit from a more diplomatic approach.

Ejiofor highlighted the complexities of the conflict in the Southeast, particularly with the growing influence of unknown gunmen who claim to be fighting in Kanu’s name. Despite these claims, Kanu has publicly condemned the violence and distanced himself from the actions of those perpetrating it.

“I will strongly appeal to the government to use this opportunity to unconditionally release Kanu,” Ejiofor stated, noting that the violent groups in the region, which have caused significant harm to the local economy, are misguided in their belief that they are fighting for Kanu’s cause.

Ejiofor also praised the security gains made in other regions of the country, like the Northeast, where concerted intelligence efforts have curtailed violence. He urged the government to apply similar strategies in the Southeast, including a political resolution, to end the unrest.
