An outbreak of Lassa fever in Taraba State has claimed 14 lives over the past three months, with six deaths recorded just last week, officials have confirmed. Dr. Kuni Joseph, Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jalingo, stated that this outbreak is the most severe the state has ever experienced.
“This is the first time we are recording such a significant number of cases in Taraba State, and efforts are being made to address the outbreak,” Dr. Joseph said.
From October 24, 2024, to January 2025, the state has recorded 84 suspected cases of Lassa fever, with 33 confirmed positive. Despite the alarming statistics, Dr. Joseph mentioned that nine patients have successfully been treated and discharged, while six remain hospitalized at FMC Jalingo.
To contain the outbreak, Dr. Joseph assured the public that substantial measures are being taken. These include intensified efforts through joint meetings involving FMC Jalingo, the Taraba State Ministry of Health, and officials from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The health authorities continue to work diligently to curb the spread of the virus and protect the population from further harm.
