An Ibadan Chief Magistrates’ Court, Mapo, on Thursday, remanded a 43-year-old woman, Yinka Kabiru, in a correctional centre for allegedly stealing rice and clothes valued at N100,000.
Kabiru, whose residential address was not disclosed, faces a two-count charge of pretence and stealing. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Latunji ordered the defendant to be remanded at Agodi Correctional Centre after she failed to meet the conditions for bail. Although Kabiru was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two reliable sureties, she was unable to fulfil the required bail conditions.
The case was adjourned until March 5 for further hearing.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Oluseye Akinola, informed the court that the defendant committed the crime in November 2024 at the Opeyemi-Idiaro area of Ibadan. Akinola said Kabiru fraudulently obtained a bag of rice valued at N85,000 and a ready-made dress worth N15,000 from the complainant, Rukayat Adewale. She promised to pay for the items by the end of November 2024 but failed to do so and disappeared. Kabiru was later apprehended by the police, following intelligence from concerned neighbours.
The prosecutor explained that Kabiru’s actions contravened Sections 419 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap. 38, Vol. II, Law of Oyo State.
