Brotherly Conflict Turns Deadly in Shanga: Police Act Swiftly
The Kebbi State Police Command has made significant arrests following two separate murder cases in the Shanga and Zuru Local Government Areas, raising serious concerns about escalating violence within the region.
Commissioner of Police Bello Sani described the incidents as “unfortunate” and called on community members to adopt peaceful means of resolving disputes, rather than resorting to violence. His remarks come as the state grapples with these tragic events.
According to a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, the first incident occurred on December 31, 2024, when Yunusa Haruna, 25, from Bakin Turu village in Shanga LGA, allegedly killed his elder brother, Isiyaku Haruna, during a violent altercation. Yunusa reportedly attacked Isiyaku with a sharp knife, leading to the victim’s death. Police responded promptly to the scene, and the suspect was arrested by officers from the Shanga Divisional Police Headquarters.
In a second tragic incident on January 8, 2025, in Zuru LGA, Abubakar Umar, 25, from Jarkasa, fatally stabbed Mohammed Bala in the head during a dispute, causing the victim’s immediate death. Umar also injured Mohammed’s younger brother, Sama’ila Bala, in the process. Zuru police swiftly apprehended the suspect following the violent confrontation.
In light of these disturbing events, Commissioner Sani condemned the acts of violence and urged Kebbi residents to address their grievances through proper channels rather than taking matters into their own hands. He emphasized the importance of peaceful conflict resolution and warned against the consequences of violence.
The Commissioner has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, who oversees the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to conduct a thorough investigation into both incidents. The suspects will be charged in court once investigations are complete.
The Kebbi State Police Command reiterated its commitment to upholding peace and order in the state and urged the public to assist law enforcement by providing credible information to support ongoing security efforts.
