Amnesty International Condemns Boko Haram Massacre of 147 in Borno
Amnesty International has strongly condemned Boko Haram’s mass killing of at least 145 people in Dumba, near Baga in Borno State, on January 12, 2025. The human rights organization called for the terrorist group to be held accountable for its ongoing atrocities, describing the killings as a horrific act against farmers and fishermen. A mass burial ceremony was held for the victims today.
The organization charged President Bola Tinubu’s government with failing to protect civilians as such killings and abductions have become too common in Nigeria. Amnesty stated that these continuous atrocities underscore the need for stronger action from the government to secure the safety of citizens and provide justice for the victims.
Governor Babagana Zulum and the United Nations have condemned the attack, offering condolences to the families of those affected. However, the Nigerian government has yet to release an official statement on the incident. This comes just weeks after President Tinubu boasted about improvements in Nigeria’s security during a media chat in late December 2024, where he expressed confidence in his administration’s security measures, stating that it is now safer to travel on Nigerian roads, a stark contrast to the situation described in Borno.
