Ondo Local Government Election Kicks Off Amid Heavy Security Presence

The local government election in Ondo State commenced on Saturday, marked by a strong security presence across various parts of the state.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), personnel from the Nigeria Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were stationed at polling centers and other strategic locations.

As early as 7:00 a.m., security forces could be seen at key points, including the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) headquarters in Akure, as well as along major roads such as the Airport Road in Akure North Local Government Area (LGA).

In other areas, such as Agbogbo Roundabout, Fiwasaye/Mobil Junction, and the A Division of the Nigeria Police on Oba Adesida Road, security teams were enforcing a restriction of movement order, turning back non-essential vehicles and pedestrians.

The security presence was also notable in Okitipupa and surrounding areas, where personnel were seen patrolling major roads and monitoring polling units.

Despite the heavy security, daily activities continued in some parts of the state. In the Ijapo Housing Estate, youths were spotted playing soccer, while some shops and food vendors remained open for business in various regions.

The election proceeded smoothly with most residents adhering to the movement restrictions, although some continued their usual routines.

This heavy security arrangement was put in place to ensure a peaceful and orderly election process, with authorities focused on maintaining calm and preventing electoral disruptions.
