New Leadership at Maritime Academy of Nigeria: Dr. Kevin Okonna Takes the Helm

The Federal Government has appointed Dr. Kevin Okonna as the Acting Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron, Akwa Ibom, effective immediately. This appointment follows the resignation of the former rector, Commodore Duja Effedua (rtd).

The announcement was made in a statement from Mrs. Domo Umoekpe, the Head of Public Affairs at the Academy, issued on Monday in Uyo. The appointment was confirmed through a letter from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, representing the Federal Government.

In his new role, the minister urged Dr. Okonna to leverage his vast expertise in the maritime sector to advance the Academy’s mission. Umoekpe emphasized that with Okonna at the helm, the Academy will continue to play a vital role in advancing the Ministry’s vision and contributing to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Dr. Okonna is a highly respected maritime scholar, with over three decades of dedicated service to the Academy. His distinguished career includes educational credentials from globally recognized institutions, including the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden.

Having ascended through the ranks, Okonna has held several significant positions at MAN Oron, including the pioneering roles of Head of the Maritime Safety Department, Director of the now-defunct MAN Consultancy Services, and Director of the Strategy and Research & Development Directorate.

Additionally, he is a distinguished member of the Nautical Institute (NI), UK, and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). His contributions to the growth and development of the Academy have been immeasurable, and his appointment promises to further strengthen its impact on maritime education and research.
